Jakarta. Twelve robbers shot and killed an officer from the police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) and seriously wounded a security guard during the robbery of a CIMB Niaga bank branch in Medan, North Sumatra, on Wednesday.
North Sumatra Police Chief Insp. Gen. Oegroseno told SCTV that 12 robbers arrived at the bank, located on Jalan Aksara, on motorcycles at midday.
Oegroseno said the men entered the bank and immediately opened fire, shooting the Brimob officer in the chest, killing him and wounding the security guard. The guard is in a critical condition in hospital.
He said it would be difficult to identify the men because they wore motorcycle helmets.
Agus, an eyewitness, told a local newspaper that he heard two shots.
“I thought they were the sound of a burst vehicle wheel but when I looked outside, I saw there were many people with guns in front of the bank,” Agus said, adding that the robbery lasted less than 10 minutes.
The robbers made off with Rp 200 million ($22,000).
